The name derives from Arabic meaning "the southern claw", and got its name officially in 2016. Zubenelgenubi is actually a collection and system of four stars, and more recently it is thought there is a fifth star component to the system even. These stars are most likely members of a cluster-group of stars that all have a similar motion through space and share a common origin roughly 200 million years ago. Zubenelgenubi is also the dimmest star in the Navigational Star series.
