Menkar is a red giant found in the constellation of Cetus the Whale, and is the second brightest star in the constellation. Still designated Alpha Ceti, Menkar is located approximately 250 light-years away. It's an aging star that has exhausted its core hydrogen fuel and is in the process of shedding its outer layers to form a planetary nebula.
